  5.     There was good news and bad news for Washington Mayor Marion
  6. Barry last week. The good news is that U.S. Attorney Jay
  7. Stephens decided not to seek to retry him on 12 cocaine and
  8. perjury charges that deadlocked a jury last month. The decision
  9. was a relief to those who feared a second trial would rekindle
  10. racial tensions that have cooled in recent weeks. The bad news
  11. for Barry is that Stephens indicated he would recommend a
  12. prison term, unusual for a first misdemeanor, when the mayor
  13. is sentenced next month on the single count of cocaine
  14. possession for which he was convicted. Though he is running for
  15. the city council, his chances seemed to dwindle after the
  16. Democratic mayoral-primary victory of Sharon Pratt Dixon, who
  17. campaigned on a promise to end the Barry legacy. That would be
  18. good news for Washington.
